A Letter to My DJ

Whadddup stranger? Master of Melodies, Neo-Sound Explorer, Crowd Motivator, and Conductor of F-L-O-W…I miss you and I want you back. Lately you’ve been plenty predictable, sometimes not even noticeable…because frankly, the DJ is no longer the center of the universe. You are an accessory.

You’ve got me feeling empty, uncomfortable, unmotivated, and contemplating whether I should leave for good…

But back in the day you had me dancing in circles…flirting with me from your booth, playing record after record, giving me no other choice but to stay until the crack of dawn….”Okay one more song and we’re out!” But then 2 minutes later…”Oh-no-he-didn’t!” Suddenly I’d find myself willingly stuck…greeting you with a smile as both the lights in the room and sun came up.

I remember you in Junior High when the principal allowed you to DJ our school dances. You gave me my first of many musical experiences…which were rarely played in my home. Not that I grew up restricted, but music didn’t play an integral role in my upbringing. So when you came along, I was hooked! I was a fiend for your mixes and searched the radio frantically for the sounds you played. I practiced new dances in the mirror and my neighbor and I would get our routines together so when you dropped THAT record…we’d be on it.

In high school, life with you got easier and we had the ultimate connection. You influenced my style and had me walking to your beats in my head every time I hit the pavement. My mom was a bit more open to the idea of having you in the house and my sister and I danced to your mélanges in the attic. Once a week I took my allowance, bought a vinyl, and tried to copy your style. Friends would come over and beg to know where I got THAT from! Everyone wanted a dub! Let’s not forget the DJ-over-the-phone-game….Haaaaaaa! Remember those days? “I dedicate this song to you!” (Insert mix tape, press play, lay on the pillow, phone to the ear, breathe…)

But what’s a full high school experience without the House parties!? The chaperones were upstairs while us girls were in the basement, pinned up against a wall by a cutie grinding against our hips. The only light in the entire room came from the corner where your turntables and records were set up. I remember how hyped we’d get when we’d hear the hint of an instrumental creeping in while you faded out that last song, right before you put the record back in the crate. B.L.E.N.D.I.N.G.

In college you were the shhhhhhhhhhhhhit! You set the mood, pace, and dress code for all that was happening on and off campus. We didn’t listen to the radio to hear the newest hit…we went to the parties and witnessed YOU breaking records in for the first time. There were too many parties to choose from and it was often hard to commit to one. So we went to them all and watched you work the room with your hand maneuvering and musical selection. Your match-making skills were impeccable as well. You always seemed to know what to drop at that exact moment a Shorty decided to join another on the dance floor…singing all in each other’s ear…Who could hold up the wall with you spinning? And I remember back then…it was okay to sweat, (because it was a sign that you had a good time!) So we all went home W.E.T.

Later I learned more from you during my internships and various industry gigs. That’s when I decided I may want to try this all myself. I took notes and appreciated the fact that you came in many forms and gave variety its definition. Seems like in those days you had a bit more freedom to play what you thought was “hot” vs. what management dictated you should play. Now you seem to want to please too many people from record labels, to corporate America, to your critics who seem to get younger and more disconnected from what REAL music is. *sigh*

And don't get me wrong...I know you feel the pressures of mainstream/commercial radio. You feel like you need to play what's “HOT” right now. (Look at your sources!) Between the music video shows, radio stations playing the same song 2-3 times an hour at-the-same-time, manufactured BEEFS between camps just to guarantee a major hit, and club owners, promoters & PD’s choreographing your play list….I’m surprised you still have the energy or desire to keep going. But once we started to predict the order of songs you’d play….we discovered a bigger problem. Plus you squeeze in so many songs in one set! There’s no need to prove what you have in your collection! We know you have it…you’re supposed to. You’re a DJ.

Remember when you were the headliner? Today DJ’s doesn’t get the same amount of respect. It’s the year of the IPods and the new way to blend which we call…the UNBLEND: cutting off records which sound more like nails on a chalk board. Now what do we have to look forward to besides open bar and the occasional live performance from an artist? Shout outs over a Biggie beat?

Let me remind you of YOU and your worth:

YOU were the reason we wanted to get to the club at a decent time…not because of free drinks before midnight. YOU were the determining factor on whether or not we should even go! But if we saw your name on the flyer, not even the flakey door guy could keep us from you! YOU were what we talked about on the way there and when we left the party. YOU were the reason we didn’t necessarily need a dance partner…eyes closed, one hand in the air, following YOUR lead…vibing with YOU. YOU were the KING of the mid day mix and the surprise guest at the summer barbeques. YOU were the most important detail at the wedding, step show, after party, and yes….the club. Promoters didn’t tell you how much they’d pay you, YOU’d tell them. YOU broke records in a non conventional way and were the stamp-of-approval artists needed in order to get sales. The DJ’s cosign was like gold and you were respected because of that. Now artists are sh*tting on DJ’s like they sh*t on bloggers and in this day of technology….they need both.

So I dare YOU to bring YOU back. I double-dog-dare-you to play MUSIC vs. a slew of curses and derogatory terms disguised as a mix. I dare you to keep your shout outs to a minimum and I challenge you to NOT play that one current popular record more than 2 times tonight. Sheesh! Let’s see if you can get me up from my table, on to the middle of the dance floor. You think I wore these heels NOT to be seen? C’mon Son!

I don’t mean to be harsh, but I need you to know this…because I’ve no-ticed. I miss you, but not from a lover’s point of view, but as a fan. You taught me how to soul-clap like a mom teaches her daughter how to walk in heels. Played that record that made me say “daaaaamn...I haven't heard that in a minute!” Don’t you miss that “ooooooooh” sound we’d all make when you’d throw on an import remix that no one has heard? How about that song on that album that wasn't released as a single but you know is HOTTTT!?! Yeah…that one. And I loved it when you created your very own hypnotic fused melodies of wonderful vocals over that unsuspecting Hip Hop music bed. You did that and you did it well.

You love music and you love to DJ. Do what you love for the love of the craft and don’t lose yourself in politics, peer pressure, PDs, podcasts, and people coming up to you with peculiar requests. Because this new YOU isn’t YOU and I don’t know how much longer I can stay.

Love, M.O.C.H.A

*Much respect to some of the DJs I’ve followed over the years... Red Alert, Darrel James, SnS, Jazzy, Frank Ski, Cosi, Premier, Jazzy Joyce, Coco Channel, Sting International, Irie, Craig G, LSONE, Spinna , The old Funk Master Flex , Backspin, Lennox, Mustafa & Crime, Bizmarkie, NVS Styles, Severe, Bobby Konders, Rob Dinero , Naturally, Spinbad , Walshy, D-Nice and all the DJs who are hungry, humble and wholeheartedly trying to make their mark in the industry…SALUTE!

And my 1st adult crush: Qool DJ Marv….the only DJ I followed from club to club to club to club. Mica Bar, Ludlow, Bar 6, Izzy, 2 I’s, U.B.I.Q.U.I.T.A, Guernica and more… Thanks for making sure I NEVER got carded.

ONE.

  3. This one hurt but I needed to read it. Some of us deejays are taking tha easy road. We not preparing before a set. We not focusing on the crowd and what they respond to. damn lil mamma. I didn't think I'd want to read this but its the truth. Thanks from me and a few deejays who still need to learn.

  4. Mocha.....THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! Girl I thought it was just me!! I found myself reading your blog and saying, "YEAHHH FOR REAL!" Im sick of DJ's djing for themselves?? I thought it was suppose to be about ME the fly mami on the dance floor trying to get her dance on! How did it become about the DJ?? Since when can a dj be behind the turntables OOPS I meant THE MACBOOK AND the dance floor at the same time?? If that was the case then cool dj for yourself but it's ABOUT ME NOT YOU DJ!! I remember when you'd go out and there were NO cuties but it was ok because the DJ was so dope it didnt even matter because me and my girls would be too busy on the dance floor dancing our butts off to even notice or complain about it LOL. NOW?? WACK DJ, WACK dudes makes me wonder what I wasted this fly outfit for!! If the DJ is caught up into politics or whatever the reason for his/her WACKNESS is why do I have to suffer?? DAMMIT MAN! being in the M-I-A I appreciate you showing LOVE to two of my homies who ALWAYS got me dancing on a natural HIGH =IRIE and NVS STYLES!!! Im going to SPREAD this blog and hopefully some of the DJ's will actually LISTEN!! I'm from QUEENS so I'm going to flip it and say "C'MON DUN" LOL

  6. Aw, now I miss my clubbing days. You are so right, the dj makes or breaks the evening. Nice post.

  7. These DJ's the reason I don't go out anymore. It's way too predictable.

Well put together statement. I couldn't have said it better myself.

  8. wow...this was great...It was like going to church and the sermon seems to be aimed directly at you. I dj and I seem to need more and more inspiration with the passing weeks. Thank you

  9. Your blog post is right on so many diffrent level. Even though my club days are gone I can remember those days I meet my husband in a club and that was 10 yrs ago. Dj was playing an old jodeci song when he asked me to dance.

  10. WOW!!!! This was on point... As a DJ sometimes we get caught up & even bored... Some of us forgot what its about.... But Supa I have a Macbook Pro & still use turntables ( gotta keep up with the times.. I now carry 15 thousand records instead 6 crates). We gotta get back to controlling the night... But remember this, most of the party people do not have any history, you can play the hot hits off the album or break new music, & they dont like it.. They wanna hear the same 10 songs they hear on the radio all day & the videos they watch... But i promise I will do my best to getting back to what it is i used to do... Get it IN!!!

  11. I wish it were that simple... Bottom line, most, not sayin all, MOST people want to hear music that they know. And what does everybody know? Whatever is in rotation on the radio. That's it. And if you try to venture off into other territory, the club/bar owners, bartenders, and the patrons will just look @ you like WTF? Clubs want the place crowded and the drinks flowing. We all know that the music WE like isn't being played on any commercial hip hop stations. Well some of it maybe but if you're a dj you either want to work or you don't. Sometimes you have to bite the bullet just to play out. I can you the money I make to buy music that I actually like. Because all of the radio stuff is getting downloaded. For every one club goer that appreciates the dj dropping something new or some old forgotten cut, there's 20 club goers that could care less and will just wait til you play "Blame it on the alcohol" to get hyped. Funny I bought Sirius thinking it would be better but it's the same ole thing with some specialty shows thrown in. At least they got Primo, Lord Sear, Subsoniq for a few hours a week... But shouldn't it be the other way around? Dj's just do what you do and hopefully things will turn around but if not we're still gonna be here.

  12. u had to 'cut' em with the truth.. tough love baby!

  13. This is the TRUTH!!! I have forwarded this to all my DJ cohorts. We are all guilty of slacking off in the DJing dept. a time or 2. And we often fall victim to playing BS radio crap because of the constant badgering of non-open minded people. Im just lucky enough to have a crowd that knows me more for eclecticism and combining Good Music with the BS. Peace and Preach On

    ReplyDelete
  14. You ain't never lied, I understand completely. I don't club much anymore, but during college...

...There's something missing from today's music, thus DJs are watered down; especially if they're not seeking quality tracks/lyrics (mainstream or underground music).

    Very well written.

  15. Good shit. real shit. Now I'm nosey. What the hell was Qoool Marv doin that made you go to all his spots? Imma have to google this nigga! lol

  16. I love this blog the one about smoking was good too. This one is good because music is universal. We can all relate. Now me and my girl listening to Power 105 in NY now mad as hell cause the dj keep choppin the records off! You're gonna make us notice everything now.

    ReplyDelete
  17. This nigga dj self just cut off chrisette michelle to play BOW WOW. Send him this blog.

  18. Very nicely written point of view from, apparently, the no-longer silent majority, who grin and bear it while DJ Shuda Practice (a lot more)shows you why the DJ is only a 1/2 step above bus boy or bar back at most establishments. Once they knew that mixing was optional, the downward spiral to mixing that sounds like someone pressing the next button on their ipod on shuffle began. (Once bad mixing got you boo'ed, the gas face, coats unchecked, etc).

Now people are too bothered to relocated themselves and their whole group to another venue, due to the wack DJ, instead, wack DJ's wackness is duly noted and wack DJ's card will not be asked for, ever.

Wack DJ, if you step into a DJ booth without the fundamentals of the craft, your run as the best of the below average will be short.

I put in 2 years of mixing every genre, in my bedroom, before I played in front of people.

Early in my mixing career (months) I got dissed by a Philly radio DJ that I had tremendous respect for...he heard me and instead of, "You killing it," he demanded, annoyed, "Why are you playing those records so sped up? You playing them too fast man."

That nudge to pay attention to an unwritten fundamental from a radio DJ that I looked up to was an ego-shrinker and it embarrassed me. And it made me better.

If I gave my mom 25 hit records and told her to play them in order, one after another, don't worry about blends, just drop it on the one...every one would text, twitter, blog, & FB that Qool DJ Marv's mom is off the hook!

The past is behind us but I carry the torch of the classic approach. New DJs who want to mix and create atmospheres, I'm proud of ya.

New DJs who know that they can get over by disguising their lack of talent by playing hit and mash-up driven sets...a question...

If you know that you are not even close to ok at this craft, why are you in front of folks pretending? Have you any pride?

We, who are very good and do this like it's second nature, make it look easy. DJ culture is full on mainstream and trendy.

The enticement to be that DJ in the booth must be awfully appealing. Learn how to DJ or be the in-the-red fraud that everyone has to endure instead of enjoy.

You won't be there for too long before your power button is switched to "off."

  20. Thanks Q Marv. Checking your website.

    ReplyDelete
  21. No shots at Marv but maybe you veterans need to speak more to some of us and let us know when we are fucking up. You can say that we should know but if you are just starting out and blending isn't being taught or witnessed you gotta pull us to the side. Deejays hate on each other so much that they let us sound like garbage. I need a mentor. Im gonna get your info from Mocha Chocolate girl.

  22. Okay I get it. I respect everyones opinion. Thanks M.O.C.H.A. and yo Qool marv I hope you go to other djs set's and check them out and if you do I hope you let them know when they doing wrong. We need to know because nobody is saying anything. Appreciate your honesty man.

    Bless

  23. Part of the blame is these clowns making these decisions at the stations and another problem is these deejays not properly passing down the torch. Each one teach one! It's easy to criticize when you're not helping. I agree with you on this blog baby girl but just like you challenge us to cut down some shit, I challenge deejays to quit hating and show some love. Share knowledge. Much respect to lsone for admitting his flaws and marv for letting us know what it is. But obviously more needs to be done. I may need your number too marv. Mocha you better start charging niggas. LMAO

  24. and lol at the nigga who said he wanna know what marv did to have you running all over ny. LMAO. I wanna know too. You didn't have ID baby girl? You was young getting up in the club? 25. Once again, thank for this blog. As a DJ in my 21st year of moving crowds, I face the daily fustration of new push button DJs who go by their iTunes playlist or the radio chart and have no idea how to read, move, or orchestrate a crowd. I've reposted and reblasted your article and will keep doing it because you have put into words what I wish more club/party goers would. In fact, the future of the DJ is somewhat in YOUR hands. Please encourage more people to complain to the club owners if the DJ is wack. They think people didnt come back for every reason under the sun without realizing that it could have been their wack DJ. Not to mention the opposite (like you mentioned), all other things could be wrong but you still may have a good time if the DJ is on point.
Its refreshing to know that the audience realizes a real DJ when they hear one. On behalf of true DJs.... WE THANK YOU.

  29. So tired of people talking shit about djs! M.O.C.H.A I ain't mad at you but it's not all our faults. I agree with the homie who said each one teach one. I'm not a scary dude so why niggas don't let us know? Feedback feeds growth. I guarentee you these well known djs don't say shit. Haters! Don't wait till someone writes a blog man. Holla at us. Comradery is necessary. What happened to DJ crews? Man marv start one so I can join.

  30. Thank you all so much for the feedback! I'm overwhelmed by the responses here and on Global Grind. Open dialogue is so cool...especially when everyone is willing to come together to think of solutions. Keep the comments coming! 40. Yeah i agree. Speaking of back in the day i remember djs killing it at The Octagon when i was to young to get in but got in anyway " The Red Zone." How about Bentley's Live Saturday Night, the old sweatbox "Nells" and Envy on Wednesday nights. Shout out to all those djs that moved the crowd and people actually came to a club to party and listen to the djs kill it as opposed to nowadays when everyone only wants to be seen in the vip area drinking off of someone else's bottle! (That a whole other topic that i am sure you can run with Miss Jean.) Oh well the good ol days glad i had a chance to experience them!

  44. You made some good points in this blog. I'm a former PD and I understand your position and concerns. Fortunately I've never "choreographed" my mixers play list but I paid close attention to whether they had a good mixture of new and classic. Sometimes its good to read feedback like this and I like some of the djs you shouted out too. I also want to know what that dj did that made you follow him from club to club. Not just because I'm nosy but because I strictly dj now I want to know what makes a person follow. It can't just be about the music and if theres more I want in. Good job young lady.

What about the djs who take low pay because they so thirsty to get on? Whos going to hold the below average dj accountable for his laziness and wack work ethic? 60. This is the main reason I became who I am today! The $ilent DJ. Great read and very much appreciated. I hope all Hollywood DJs read this as well as the average fan. Though some of the DJs you named are Hollywood as hell too, but its all good. The point is well received I'm sure by all that read this! I could go on and on about this topic & speak quite frequently on my twitter/facebook because the love for the art has disappeared. Its all about money & so many DJs have become deceitful and dishonest just to make a dollar. I love the music and always have. I do what I do not only for me, but mainly for the artist, the people & most importantly THE MUSIC! Everything I ever did in life music was always apart of it. The 1st and last memory of my mother (RIP), My 1st Kiss, My 1st day of School, The trip I made, The 1st time I laced up my shoes to play Basketball, My high school & college graduations. Hell music kept me out the streets, out of jail, prevented me from selling drugs or becoming that gang member or murderer. All my life's memories & experience all were surround by MUSIC! I owe everything and will always love the MUSIC and all that it has been in my life. It was then and still is now The Inspiration!
